Preface

This Training Guide is a tool for teaching and learning about Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) issues both in formal education and on-the-job training.

The Guide aims to demonstrate the value of FGR to promote ‘FGR-friendly’ decision making with respect to critical issues in forest and natural resource management.
The Guide has a global geographic scope and covers issues of both global and local relevance with regard to conservation and sustainable use of FGR. This guide consists of several problem-based teaching modules each comprising:

  • one or more practical case studies based on real data sets and situations;
  • support material for each case study, in the form of teacher’s notes, PowerPoint presentations and/or videos that give relevant background information for both teacher and student.

The use of the case studies will help learners to ask relevant questions related to genetic issues in various forest/tree management situations and policy level decisions.
